Adoption Today: What Does it Look Like?

Adoption is when you carry your pregnancy to term and then legally transfer your parental rights and responsibilities to an adoptive couple. They will raise your child, but that doesn’t mean you have to completely leave the picture.

Modern adoption gives the birth mother more choices and control than in past decades. The birth mother chooses everything from the adoptive family to the level of privacy and type of communication.

Adoption plans fall into three types, each determining how much contact you will have with the adoptive family and child.

  • Open adoption allows direct communication between you, the adoptive family, and your child. You can text, call, or set up meetings with them. However, it’s important to note that open adoption is not legally enforceable in Texas.
  • Semi-open adoption provides more limited information, such as first names, and communication through a third party like an adoption agency or attorney.
  • Closed adoption keeps all identifying information private. Women may choose this if they feel it provides the most safety for their child or if they feel it helps them move on.

During the whole adoption process, you are not alone; it involves counseling, education, and support so you can make sure the process feels right for you.

Reasons Why Adoption Might Be a Consideration

It’s normal to question whether adoption is the right path.

Adoption is a well-thought-out, reflective decision that women will often make when they feel as if they aren’t in the right place emotionally, physically, and financially to take care of the child and do not want an abortion. A maternity home may also be an option that would provide a safe and supportive environment for you to stay during the pregnancy.

Some reasons why adoption may be the right choice include:

  • Health – Ongoing medical conditions or mental health problems can make parenting feel more difficult. Adoption in this case allows the mother and child to receive the love and support they need.
  • Relationships – Women with limited support will find the idea of raising a child alone overwhelming. Unhealthy and unstable relationships, especially between parents, can negatively impact a child’s upbringing.
  • Finances – Without a solid financial foundation, raising a child can be difficult. You need a steady income, a safe place to give, and finances for essentials. By choosing financially secure adoptive parents, your child’s needs would be taken care of.
  • Life circumstances – The reason why a birth mother chooses adoption is deeply personal and individual; life circumstances for this option could range from education to career, and not having enough time to parent the child. Being at a younger age may mean you want to finish school and don’t feel ready to be a parent yet, making adoption the more loving choice.

It’s Okay To Feel a Mix of Emotions

Adoption can bring certainty one day and sadness the next. All your emotions surrounding the process are valid, and you do not have to rush yourself to make a decision.

Take time to process your thoughts about adoption without pressure and judgment from external influences. Learning about each of your pregnancy decisions and their risks can help you make a decision from an empowered place.

You don’t have to face this alone; our center is here to help. We offer walk-in appointments for pregnancy testing, ultrasounds after a confirmed pregnancy test, and STI testing, too.
