In the meantime, read on for tips to start healing emotionally from a miscarriage.

Remind Yourself: It’s Not Your Fault

If trapped in a cycle of “what ifs” and self-blame, remind yourself that it’s not your fault.

Miscarriage happens in as many as 10-20% of known pregnancies, and the number may even be higher. Most miscarriages occur due to developmental issues in the first trimester, such as the embryo missing a chromosome or having extra chromosomes.

Certain health conditions can raise the risk of miscarriage, but most miscarriages happen due to random events and not the woman’s fault, so free yourself from these feelings.

If you’re still struggling in this area and think you contributed, it’s time to forgive yourself. You didn’t intend to miscarry.

Take Time to Grieve

We live in a fast-paced culture that expects women to dust themselves off and move on, but it doesn’t work that way. It’s essential to take the time you need to grieve your loss.

Write your feelings out on paper or in your notes app. You could even write a letter to the child you were unable to meet. These actions can help get everything off your chest, exhale, and begin to find closure. Talk with a close friend, relative, or counselor about your feelings.

Grieving is a healthy and necessary process. Remember that you will always wonder about your miscarriage, and it could bring up sadness or different emotions, but over time, the feelings will become less raw.

Be Patient with Yourself

There isn’t a checklist to complete that will lead to total healing. Taking healthy actions is one way to help, but it’s not a total solution.

A part of this is being patient with yourself, recognizing your daily feelings, and acknowledging that it will get easier over time.
