Is Adoption The Best Option For You?
Adoption may be an option for you and your partner’s unique situation. There is more than one type of adoption plan to consider. You are empowered to request a plan that allows you to have contact with the child and the adoptive family, if that’s something you’d like for your future. Choose what’s best for you as you explore your options.
What is Adoption Like?
Many women have preconceived ideas of what adoption looks like. You may have a family or friend who was adopted, or you may have seen adoption portrayed in movies, books, or TV. Sometimes adoption is portrayed in a negative light but it’s simply not the case. Mothering looks different for every woman.
Adoption is a loving choice and as the expectant birth mother, you’re in control and the process is about advocating for your needs. You choose the adoptive family you want to raise your child.
Adoption Plans to Choose From
Choose an adoption plan that works for your lifestyle. Here are the three different types of adoption plans to choose from:
- Open Adoption: Create a lasting relationship with the adoptive family and child. You can request to have contact through letters, phone calls, visits, and more. Your child would know who you are and your role in their life.
- Semi-Open Adoption: Semi-open adoptions aren’t as common, but they could still be an option for you. With this adoption, you’ll have contact with the adoptive family and your child. However, all contact is mediated through a third party, such as an adoption attorney or agency.
- Closed Adoption: Closed adoptions offer the highest levels of privacy. With this adoption plan, all identifying records are sealed, so you and the adoptive family won’t know each other.
