If you think you might be pregnant, knowing the right time to take a test is important for getting accurate results. Taking one too early can sometimes give you unclear or false results, which may leave you with even more questions.

At Brazos Pregnancy Center, we provide free and confidential pregnancy testing in a safe, supportive environment. You don’t have to wonder—schedule an appointment today.

The Best Time to Take a Pregnancy Test

Pregnancy tests work by detecting a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which begins to rise after a fertilized egg attaches to the wall of the uterus. It usually takes time for this hormone to build up to a level that can be detected.

For the most accurate results, waiting until at least the first day after your missed period is best. Testing earlier may give you a negative result even if you are pregnant, simply because hCG hasn’t risen high enough yet.

If your period still hasn’t arrived in a couple of days to a week, test again to see if your test result is now positive. Taking the test in the morning, when hCG is most concentrated in your urine, can also improve accuracy, especially when you are very early in pregnancy.

Other Factors to Consider

Every cycle is different; things like stress, travel, or illness can cause your period to come later than usual.

If your period continues to be late but your pregnancy test continues to be negative, reach out to your health care provider for answers. They can investigate other possible causes or order a pregnancy blood test.
